Our Australian Coal business purchases around 1,200 kilometres of steel cable each year. That’s enough to stretch from Sydney to Brisbane if laid in a straight line 😯 In Australia, we purchase a wide range of goods and services and the steel cable and rods we buy are used to support the strata (roofs) in underground mines.

Across our Glencore sites, we came together to commemorate ANZAC Day and acknowledge the contribution and sacrifice of those who have served and continue to serve our country. At many of our sites, dawn services were held for employees. 📷 The Environment team at Glencore McArthur River Mine also created a wreath using Australian native plants—featuring Acacia, Casuarina, Eucalyptus and Golden Wattle—as a symbol of resilience, remembrance and connection to country. Lest we forget.

Did you know Bulga coal used mine underground? Bulga Underground was a longwall mining operation which started in 1992. All three underground operations, South Bulga, Beltana and Blakefield South, had ceased operation by 2018. 📸 No.1 Longwall Support, the last support removed from Panel 1B by Yellow Crew when underground mining ended that year. It’s a privilege to give back! Our Queensland Metals operation proudly funded around 60 community initiatives in 2024. Many of these community organisations rely on grants to continue providing essential services and amenities to Mount Isa, Camooweal and Townsville. We recognise the hard work that small, not-for-profit organisations put into the projects and it’s rewarding to see communities, individuals, and businesses benefiting from our sponsorships. ➡️ https://www.glencore.com.au/operations-and-projects/qld-metals/resourceful/resourceful-february-2025/supporting-our-local-community-partners

ℹ️ Fun fact: 5,000 tonnes of ice was used to keep the concrete cool during construction of the Mount Isa Lead Smelter Stack to help combat the scotching heat of the outback. Built between 1977 and 1978, it took two years and 17,400 tonnes of concrete to complete - making it the tallest man-made structure in Australia at the time. Standing 270 metres tall, this Lead Stack has a diameter of 22-metres at the base, a diameter of 12.4-metres at the top, a thickness of 700mm of concrete at the base, and a thickness of 235mm of concrete at the top 😮 A true engineering feat.
