Sail Training
Sailing lessons and training programs for all ages and levels are offered at Zeekoe Vlei Yacht Club.
The courses are run by very capable and friendly coaches and, with their assistance, have drawn up an interesting and exciting program for you. Provision has been made in the programme for different levels of enthusiasm and commitment, so that everyone who starts will finish having had the opportunity to progress at their own pace.
The coaching sessions include course notes, coaching and coach’s powerboats. Optimist dinghies for the juniors can be chartered per term and is not necessary to own your boat initially.
If the weather is unsuitable for sailing, coaching will still take place in a training room - there is always something to learn - knots, tactics, racing rules, etc.
The TUCK SHOP is open on Sundays during the sailing season to enjoy hot coffee, tea, muffins, cake, toasted sandwiches and other yummy snacks. Fantastic Sunday lunches, served by Rochelle’s Kitchen, are on sale from the GALLEY and can be enjoyed indoors, or as a picnic on the lawns.The swimming pool, pool table, fuse-ball & table tennis are available for all members to enjoy.
JUNIOR SAILING LESSONS & TRAINING

HOLIDAY CLINICS
During most holidays over Spring & Summer, we run Learn2Sail short courses contact the club to find the best solution for you. These courses are generally 3 days and offer the opportunity to have a taste of sailing before signing up as members and continuing with the weekly lessons.
SUNDAY & WEEKDAY COURSES
Children are taught on the Optimist which is a small, safe and simple international class of boat. Children that excel in sailing the Optimist would have the chance to try out for the South African teams competing at the African and/or World Optimist Championships.
And for those that just want to sail & have fun – we cater for them as well!
ZVYC has a number of Optimist dinghies for children to hire – no need to have your own to start out!
Courses run during the summer school terms:
- January to April (1st school term)
- September to end November / early December (4th school term)
Our 3 month courses offer children the opportunity to learn to sail as a beginner or training for the “weathered” sailor looking for advanced racing techniques.
Courses run on Sunday mornings starting promptly at 09h30 and finishing at ±12h30.
Weekday courses run after school on a Thursday and Friday afternoon.
SCHOOL’S PROGRAMMES
Zeekoe Vlei Yacht Club looks after Bishops College & SACS High school sailing programmes. These schools come on particular days during the week after school for sail training.
YOUTH SAIL TRAINING
From approximately the age of 15, the youth learn to sail on larger dinghies such as 420s or Dabchicks. Please enquire with the club for the best options
ADULT SAIL TRAINING
For adults we offer tailor made packages to fit in with your schedule. Sailing lessons can be arranged privately or as a group. Please enquire with the office
LADIES SAIL TRAINING
We run a ladies sailing group on a Thursday morning durning the Summer season. Please enquire at the office
Please dress warmly, bring your sunblock and hat, gloves, wear a pair of old takkies that you won’t mind getting wet and bring a change of clothing in the event of you getting wet when launching the boats and when sailing. If you have your own life jacket please bring it along but if not we will provide you with one.
