The 2023 Wrestling Academy Junior Club Championships were held on 16-APR at Noarlunga Liesure Centre. This was the culmination of a weekend training camp that saw ten young athletes striving for improvement and pushing their limits.
For the competition, the athletes were put into two divisions:
- 25 to 35 kg, with ages ranging from 8 to 10 (this year)
- 35 to 45 kg, with ages ranging from 9 to 13 (this year)
The winner of the lighter class was relative new-comer, Tyler Dunstall, who surprised many with his determination and skill. The runner up was Murat, who always goes his hardest and continues to improve. Third place was AJ, who was the youngest athlete in the competition but always makes his larger opponents earn every point.
After aggravating a pre-existing injury, one of the favourites in the heavier class unfortunately had to withdraw. The winner was then John Denton, who continue to impress and will be one to look out for in the Youth Nationals this year. Runner up was Sasha, who catches out many with his great technical skills. Third place was Max, the youngest in the division but not intimidated in the slightest by his older opponents.
A big thanks to Coach Luba who ran the whole training camp as well as refereed the competition. Thanks also to the other volunteers as well as the parents for their support. The kids are now much better prepared for the State Titles next month, leading in to the National Titles in October, hosted right here in Adelaide.
