Saturday Soul Sistas Victoria Hill Diggings Walk
Event information
On 13 May, Saturday Soul Sistas will be a walk through the Victoria Hill Diggings. The group will meet at 2.00 pm in the carpark at Albert Richardson Reserve at 40 Marong Road, Ironbark. Please wear good walking shoes and dress appropriately for the weather.
Gold was discovered on Victoria Hill in 1854. There are relics to be seen on the walk through the reserve from Christopher Ballerstedt and George Lansell’s mines. These two men played a major role in Bendigo’s development and the area has been registered as a site of significance.
The diggings reserve is accessed from the rear of Albert Richardson Reserve located on Marong Road. The site has steep and unformed paths and is closed to the public at dusk. It is important to stay to the paths to avoid the diggings. Interpretive signs help visitors to appreciate the importance of the site and the remaining relics of Bendigo’s mining history.
