Junior Roller Derby Rolls Into The Gong
Wollongong Illawarra Roller Derby's Junior team the 'Nuts and Bolts' are taking to the track for the first time on Saturday the 27th March 2021. Wollongong will be taking on a Potluck team with Juniors travelling from Newcastle, Canberra, and Western Sydney.
Thirteen Wollongong juniors from ages 7 - 17 will be taking to the track on Saturday for a friends and family bout, as they debut as the Nuts and Bolts. Junior Roller Derby is an emerging sport in NSW, however, with limited teams across the state, this is the first time Wollongong's juniors will be able to play as a united team.
Jaded Child (aka Jade) is excited to play on her home turf in front of her friends and family. "We have been training together for a while now, it is great to finally be able to return to roller derby and actually hold a game in Wollongong."
"I am really excited for my parents to be able to cheer me on, something we didn't think would be possible for a while yet due to COVID."
"It is great to be able to finally all play as a team, we may have some other players from other teams join us on the day. We like to give everyone an opportunity to play, though mostly I will be playing with my fellow WIRD skaters." Jade said.
The Nuts and Bolts will be able to watch their senior team members play first as Wollongong take on Inner West, in what will be their first co-ed bout of the year. Due to ever-changing COVID restrictions, the first game since 2019 is for family and friends only.
