Wheki
Event information
Wheki Forest is on Baker Road, about a 30 minute drive from central Whangarei.
Drive west on SH14, through Maungatapere. Turn Right onto Whatitiri Road, then left onto Baker Road
Regsitration and starts from 10am - Course Closure 12.30pm
There will be 4 courses. Red Long, Red Short, Orange and Yellow. This is a forest map. The pine trees on some parts of the map are quite tall , so there is variable visibility on the map depending on which part of the forest you are moving through. This is a gully spur map, but I have tried to design the courses to minimise hill climbs. Take care on the uneven ground. There are some areas of long or rough grass, some fences, some marshes and water courses to cross. The courses have been designed to take you across the formed bridges on the largest water course,so please cross this creek at these marked crossing points.
The Red Long course is physically challenging, there are multiple route choices ( to run over or around spurs) and is navigationally more difficult than many of our maps. Please only register for this course if you are physically fit and have navigational experience. The Red Short course is still a navigational challenge and at 3km ( as the bird flies) still a reasonably long course, although much less hill climbing than the Red Long. If you are unsure of which course to choose, for this event, please choose the easier course, which may mean running the Orange course rather than the Red course if you have minimal navigational experience.
Everyone is advised to use a compass for this event. The club has some available for loan. If you get lost/misplaced on the map, the exit bearing is NorthWest to Baker Road then follow the road North to the car parking. Cell phones work on various parts of the map, but standard orienteering safety is to carry a whistle and blow it if you need help
Like Smugglers, the start will be a little way up the forest track and it will be a self punching start.
We will try to improve the registration process at this event. Register online, if you can to help ensure we have enough maps for everyone
Please pick up the map for the course that you want to run from the labelled plastic boxes beside the registration table. Pick up a plastic map bag if needed, then check in to the registration table to collect a Sport Ident and to pay ( if paying on the day), and ask for a compass if required. (We have a limited number of compasses)
Then you can make your way up the track to self start. Remember to return to the finish before course closure at 12.30pm.
Entry fees: WHO member = $10, Non-member = $15, WHO member family = $25
