The Sailing World Cup – Melbourne 2016, held in the St Kilda Sailing Precinct, was the Final to the 2016 Sailing World Cup Series that started in Melbourne in December 2015. This series is the pinnacle Olympic sailing series for professional sailors who will have recently competed in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games and have a focus for Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The regatta also involved a number of invited classes providing a chance for talented club sailors to compete alongside the stars of our sport.
In the Olympic classes WYC was represented by Pip Pietromonaco, back in the Nacra 17 with new crew Conor Nicholas from WA. They finished 6th behind Rio silver medallists Jason Waterhouse and Lisa Darmanin. Somers YC's Michelle Bursa was just behind them in 7th place.
In the invited classes, Hugo Vandame sailed in to second place (and first under 11 competitor) to win a silver medal in the Intermeidate Optimist class. His training partner Danial Laverty from Somers took 8th place. You can see some great photos of the Opti racing in the WYC Photo Gallery and a more detailed account of Hugo and Daniel's exploits in the regatta and the lead up event at Brighton in the WYC webite article.
In the Sabre class, Phil Balcombe finished 21st and Wendy Wilson from Somers YC took 15th place
In the 420 class, Lucy Gray and crew Stephanie Lee sailed consistently to take 23rd place.
