The 2016-17 Commodore's Cup series got underway (first heat was blown out in November) in warm conditions. In a gentle breeze that swung between ENE and NNE, first time Sailing Officer Vincent Cross, with assistance from Alan Bryson, set a fair course that challenges skippers to make use of the wind shifts to gain advantage. The 3 catamarans competing had a great tussle with the lead changing many times during the race, but it was Joe Etherson in his Impulse who managed the conditions the bast to take out first place.
The end of the race was marked with a rain squall that came through as the fleet returned to shore. Brendan Corcoran was capsized and separated from his boat but Graham Henderson and Glenda Bayley on the rescue boat managed to get Brendan to shore while Tom Runting retrieved Brendan's Sabre and brought it safely back to shore.
