MEMBERS' UPDATE: SEPTEMBER 2024

Published Tue 17 Sep 2024

Dear Members,

Here is the latest update regarding the activities and important news.

1. Pennant Update

At last year's Rules Night, I mentioned that Sporty HQ was on its last legs and would be used for the final time in the Spring 2023 pennant. However, Squash NSW continues to use the platform, and although there have been several glitches with player ratings, these issues tend to resolve just before the next round.

Spring Pennant 2024 began in the first week of August and runs for 15 weeks without breaks, including over the October long weekend. The finals will be held on Wednesday, November 20, and the grand final on Wednesday, November 27. The structure for the finals is as follows:

  • Team 1 will have a week off and go straight to the grand final.
  • The 4th-placed team will score and umpire the final between 2nd and 3rd place.
  • The winner of the 2nd vs 3rd match will proceed to the grand final, and the loser will be required to umpire and score the grand final.

2. Sub-Club Service Awards

Wenty Leagues Club values the dedication of its sub-club committee members. To honour their contributions, they have introduced the 25-year and 15-year service awards for continuous service in official roles such as president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, or committee member. Nominations were submitted by Vice President Rob Spooner, and five squash club members have been nominated:

  • Ken Darke: Foundation member since 1964, life member since 1979, former president 1964-1967 & 1983-1986 and vice president 1972-1980, and club patron 2004-2012.
  • Elwyn Griffiths: Joined in 1974, life member since 1988, former club captain 1982-1987 and president 1989-2015.
  • Rhonda Rumble: Joined in 1988, life member since 2001, and served as treasurer from 1992 to 2009.
  • Chris Mitrovich: Joined in 2004, served as club captain from 2008 to 2024, responsible for team selections and organizing club events.
  • Wendy Fox: Joined in 2001, life member since 2019, vice-captain from 2005 to 2024, responsible for team selections & event organization.

3. Secretary Position Available

The role of Secretary at Wenty Leagues Squash Club is now vacant following the resignation of Peter Bastow due to personal and professional commitments. This important role is a fantastic opportunity for a dedicated member who wishes to become more involved in the club’s operations and contribute to the continued success of Wenty Leagues Squash Club.

The Secretary is responsible for several key tasks:

  • Administrative Duties: Managing club records, including meeting minutes, player lists, and correspondence with both internal club members and external organizations.
  • Communication: Acting as the liaison between the club committee, members, and Wenty Leagues Club management. This includes preparing agendas for meetings, circulating information to members, and keeping everyone informed about upcoming events and decisions.
  • Coordination: Ensuring all required reports and documentation are submitted on time, especially for competitions, team selections, and special events. The Secretary also works closely with other committee members to ensure the smooth running of the club.
  • Support: Assisting the President and other committee members with organizing key club events such as the Social Days, Inter-Club Challenges, and presentation nights.

Why Join the Committee? Becoming the Secretary provides an excellent opportunity to:

  • Make a Difference: You will play an active role in shaping the future of Wenty Leagues Squash Club and ensuring that it remains a vibrant community for squash enthusiasts.
  • Leadership: Gain valuable experience in leadership and administration, helping to guide the club’s strategic direction and manage its day-to-day operations.
  • Be Part of a Team: Work closely with the passionate members of the committee who are committed to fostering the club’s values and supporting its growth.

The role is voluntary, but the rewards are great. The personal satisfaction of seeing the club thrive and knowing you’ve contributed to its success is immense. The Secretary also enjoys a closer connection with the members and the club’s leadership, helping to make a tangible impact on club activities.

If you are interested in taking on this rewarding role or would like more information about what is involved, please contact us. We welcome all inquiries and are happy to provide more details about the responsibilities and expectations of this key position.

4. Social Day 6.0

Social Day 6.0 is scheduled for Sunday, October 13, 2024. This popular event is a fantastic way for members to connect, play squash, and enjoy refreshments afterward. The format will continue using single yellow dot balls, with competitive matches followed by a social gathering with pizza, nibbles, and drinks. We encourage members to register early, as our Social Days tend to sell out fast!

5. Inter-Club Challenge vs TLC Titans

Our Inter-Club Challenge against the TLC Titans will take place on Saturday, November 16, 2024, at Northmead Squash Centre. After our recent victory over Canterbury Squash Club, we are eager to take on our local rivals in what promises to be a competitive and exciting day of squash.

Members are welcome to register for this event; however, please note that the final team selection will be based on the following criteria:

  • The top 18 players will be selected based on Sporty HQ ratings at the time of the challenge.
  • The selected team will aim to present our strongest lineup to compete against TLC.
  • Players’ recent performances, availability, and overall contribution to the club may also be considered during the selection process.

We encourage all interested members to register, as even if not selected to play, there will be plenty of opportunities to support the team and participate in this thrilling event.

6. End-of-Year Celebration

Our End-of-Year Get-Together will be held on Thursday, November 28, 2024, at the Wenty Leagues Club ‘Pavilion’. This free event is open to all past and current members, with early bird registration for the 2025 Autumn Pennant, saving you $30 on fees. The evening includes a supper, drink vouchers, and a chance to win Wendy’s Lucky Door prize.
