Club Legend Rob Spooner invited to play at Martin Place in March 2024

Tens of thousands of spectators will be able to see the best squash players in the world next year with the Glass Court at the City Tattersalls Group Australian Open set to be built in Martin Place, in the heart of Sydney’s CBD.

And the great news is that Club Legend, Life Member & Vice President Mr Rob Spooner has been invited to play.

For many years, PSA World Tour events have been held in iconic places such as New York’s Grand Central Station, London’s Canary Wharf, Burj Park in Dubai and in front of the Pyramids in Egypt. Now another spectacular venue can be added to the list.

With Martin Place one of the busiest business districts in the city of Sydney, the sport will be on show to an unprecedented audience.

Robert Donaghue, Squash Australia CEO, said the green light to build the court in Martin Place is huge win for the sport and its fans.

“The next Australian Open has been elevated to PSA World Tour status for the first time in more than a decade, which will attract the best players in the sport to Sydney in March,” said Donaghue. “Being able to put the sport on centre stage in the middle of Sydney will showcase the event to the public in a way we’ve never been able to achieve in this country before.

“It’s taken a great deal of imagination and hard work behind the scenes to pull this off, but we’re grateful to be given the go ahead and we’re determined to make this one of the iconic tournaments on the international calendar.

“Being able to announce the news just a week after Squash was admitted into the Olympic programme for 2028 is further evidence that the sport is resurging in Australia and around the world.”

The event will be held from 20-24 March with tickets on sale soon, in addition to corporate hospitality packages. Matches not played on the Glass Court will be held at other venues around Sydney including City Tattersalls Club.

In addition to the PSA World Tour event, Graded men's and women's events will be held in Premier, A, B, C, D & E divisions. Entries for these events are now open. Click here for more information.
