Wenty Leagues Squash Club at Northmead

About

The Wenty Leagues Squash Club was established in 1964 when the Leagues Club approved a $12.00 Grant. Foundation members of the Club included Dennis McCaffrey, Sid Goodwin and Life members Allan Towart, Maurice Wheatley, Rod Howard and Ken Darke.

In the early days the Club played out of the Bennett Street Wentworthville Courts (now demolished).

In 1969 as part of the Leagues Club renovations, 2 squash courts, a gymnasium and sauna were constructed in the basement of the Club. The squash club continued to play out of Bennett Street as well as the Leagues Club.

In 1979, the Leagues club built an additional 3 courts, including 2 glass backed courts. However, these were demolished in 1995 to make way for the now Explorer Lounge.

The Club then relocated to the Coolibah Squash and Fitness Centre at Merrylands West until June 2017 when the Club relocated to its present location, the Northmead Squash Centre.

The main activities of the Club include participating in the Western Districts Pennant competitions and other in-house activities. Many of our members also participate in a morning mid-week competition, the NSW Masters Events, held at different venues throughout the State and the Australian Master’s events which are played intra-state.

Sixty years on, Wenty Leagues Club continues to support our Squash Club. Squash is an exciting fast-paced international game for all ages that is great for improving cardio fitness and racquet and ball skills. The age range of current members extends from 20+ to 80 and we are always looking for additional players to participate in our activities!

As there are no squash courts at Wenty Leagues Club itself, all home matches and internal competition matches are played at Northmead Squash Centre, 201 Windsor Road, Northmead. If you are interested in joining the Squash Club, please contact the secretary, Bernard Worsley at squash@wentyleagues.com.au.
