History

The Warwick Men’s Hockey Association was formed in 1929 and was the first country centre to be formed in Qld. The Association is the oldest affiliated sub-association of Queensland Hockey Association (now known as Hockey Queensland).

Three clubs were formed – Harlequins, Wyverns and Trojans. Corinthians joined early in 1930. St Andrews club replaced Trojans in mid 1930 and a 4WK team was also formed after the mid 1930’s. After WW11 two new clubs were formed to play B Grade – St Mark’s Young Men’s Club and Sons of Servicemen. These two later amalgamated to form Saints in 1953.

The first inter-city match in Qld was played on the June long weekend of 1929 when Warwick defeated Brisbane in Brisbane.

The first representative colours for Warwick Hockey were chosen in 1932 – maroon and royal blue shirts and white shorts worn with maroon socks with blue tops.

Warwick & District Women’s Hockey Association was formed in 1932. There were four teams – Aces, Excelsiors, High School and Wattles.

While there were some disruptions during the War it was the proud boast of the Women’s Association that it was one of the only centres outside Brisbane to continue playing through the war.

The Warwick Women’s Association eventually merged with the Warwick Men’s Association in 1991 to form the Warwick Hockey Association inc.
