Meets explained
Swim meet — The term 'swim meet' generally refers to a swimming competition.
Summer meets and Winter meets — The summer season starts in October and ends in March. The Winter season starts in April and ends in September.
Long Course (LC) vs Short Course (SC) — A 50-metre pool is used in a long course. A 25-metre pool is ised in a short course. Summer meets are long course, and WInter meets are short course.
Event — An event is generally referred to a specific swim event i.e. 50 metres Freestyle or 200 metres Individual Medley. A swimmer may enter to swim in multiple events at a meet.
Development Meet — Development Meet is designed to introduce new swimmers to competitive swimming. It provides the opportunity for swimmers to put their squad learnings to practice, and to get used to competitive swimming procedures and expectations, in a fun and friendly environment. Swimmers are supported by club coaches at these meets. There are generally three to four Development Meets each season.
Distance Meet — The Distance Meet is usually held in the afternoon following the Development Meet. The DIsctance Meet covers events 200m and up. Swimmers can register to swim up to two events at each Distance Meet.
Qualifying Meet — Qualifying Meets are generally for the more advanced swimmers who have achieved qualifying times for one or more events. Some swimmers may find themselves having to swim different events across Development and Qualifying Meets until they have achieved the required qualifying times for all their events. Some events will drop back to Development when a swimmer moves up an age group and have not achieved the qualifying time for that event in the new age group. There are generally three Qualifying Meets each season.
Regional Meet — There are a number of Regional Meets each year that ACT swimmers can resgister to participate in. For example, NSW Country Regionals that are helpd across multiple locations. These meets provide the swimmers the opportunity to be meet and swim with other swimmers in the region.
Championships — Swimmers will need to achieve the required qualifying times for the different Championships. Examples of Championships include the ACT Championships, ACT Winter Championships, NSW Country Championships, NSW State Age Championships (Junior and Senior), Australian Age Championships.
Speedo Sprint Heats — The Speedo Sprint Series is an exciting, entry-level annual competition run by swimming Areas and Swimming NSW. The Speedo Sprint Series caters for swimmers aged between 8-13 years to swim in 50m Freestyle, Breaststroke, Backstroke and Butterfly events.
Speedo Finals — Speedo Sprint Series Finals are for those swimmers who placed in the top four at their area Speedo Sprint Heats.
Brophy — Each year, at the end of the Summer season, Swimming ACT hosts the Brophy meet. Brophy is a team event. These teams come from the southern half of NSW, the ACT and the NSW/Victorian border region. The events contested are the 50 metres events plus relays.
