Victorian Race Walking Club

About

The VRWC began life in 1911 as the Victorian Amateur Walking and Field Games Club. This makes it one of Australia's oldest sporting clubs. Going into recess during World War I, the club would be revived in 1921 as the Victorian Amateur Walkers' Club (VAWC). From 1993 its current name has been in use.

The VRWC is based in Melbourne. Its clubrooms are located at the Middle Park Bowling Club in Canterbury Rd, Middle Park, and can be accessed by tram (route 96), which stops outside the premises. We have two accredited 2km loop courses on which races for seniors and juniors are conducted weekly during the winter months (April-September), and periodically during the summer (October-March). Races are also held at athletics tracks in Melbourne.

The VRWC joins with country clubs in Ballarat, Geelong and Bendigo to form a joint group, Racewalking Victoria, for competition in the annual Federation carnivals in Canberra and in other states.

New members are always sought and welcomed by the VRWC, regardless of standard or age. For details contact Stu Cooper at stuwalks@yahoo.com.au, or Terry Swan at secretary@vrwc.org.au

It is also advised to visit the club website - www.vrwc.org.au - for further information.

For a detailed history of the Club, its many personalities and competitive successes, it is suggested to obtain a copy of 'History of the Victorian Race Walking Club' by Mark Donahoo. This well-researched, 279-page volume is a fascinating read, containing photos, biographies, race results, lists - even copies of old racing fixtures. (Copies are $20AUD and are available from the VRWC Clubrooms, or can be mailed if a postage charge is included.

Also available is Tim Erickson's book, 'Once Were Walkers' featuring detailed studies of the careers of all Victorian walkers who have represented Australia in international competition. This unique publication is on sale for $15 plus postage.
