Captain Neilsen Exploratory/Curtin
Event information
Registrations for this event are closed.
The Captain Neilsen was a Danish-owned dredge which capsized on 19 Sept 1964 while on assignment to deepen the channels in Moreton Bay. Sixteen of the 24 crew members were trapped within the vessel's hull. After 11 hours, 12 of the crew were successfully rescued, which was a world record at the time, however all bodies were recovered. The wreck only contains an inverted wheelhouse with scattered debris. Approx 7m x 14.4m, max depth approx 15m. (details via Federal Department of Environment & Energy, Australasian Underwater Cultural Heritage Database).
The location of the wreck was unknown for many years, however it was officially recorded in 2013. You many notice on the club noticeboard, some coordinates written by Frank Curtin while trying to find it.
I believe it's not really much to look at, but it might be fun for something different, and to tick it off your list.
The idea for the trip is to do a dive on the Captain Neilsen (provided the government GPS coordinates are correct), then a residual air dive at Tangalooma. Following a surface interval, the other dive will be on the Pines
