Umpiring

Interested in umpiring?

While umpiring is a great way to get more involved in the game and give back to the sport & club, it’s also a great side earner!

Umpiring juniors can great pocket money earner for school/uni students, while umpiring senior competition games can pay $55+ per game (and even more for higher grades or umpire qualifications).

If either you or someone you know is interested please contact Ray at umpiring.unswhockey@gmail.com with any queries including, but not limited to:

  1. Questions, concerns, or hesitations about umpiring
  2. Online registration and online self training
  3. Training, mentoring and practical assessments (umpiring trial or comp game) - higher level means better grade games and higher pay!

Club Umpiring Duties

Juniors - Friday night and Saturday Mornings

We typically need to provide an umpire for each junior team on Friday nights (U14, U16, U18) and Saturday mornings (U10, U12).  The metro comp is all over Sydney, whereas the SEHA Junior comp is mostly at Daceyville, Kyeemagh, Sutherland, Marang, Glebe and Bankstown.

Junior games are a great way to learn umpiring and get some on field experience, with umpires ranging from new, in-training junior umpires, to seniors players and keen parents.  Players often umpire around their own games as a great way to get into umpiring and earn some pocket money.

There will be an umpire training session during the season to learn all you need to know, and the SEHA site has some great resources to get started with umpiring. https://www.seha.com.au/development/umpiring/

Women’s - Sunday matches

You may or may not know, but each week we are required to supply 1 umpire for each women's game we field in the competition - so that's 11 umpires!

We engage top level umpires to fulfil our SWHL ML1 and ML2 as a season long commitment. However, if there is interest, there may be oppotunities to fill in or seek development to either umpire for UNSW, or another club who are often looking for umpires to undertake their duties (as we have in the past).

For the mid to lower grades we have a small pool of umpires within the club which we are trying to grow to have greater depth and also for cases where umpires are also players who would like to umpire around their games or not neccessirly umpire each week.  For SWHL ML3-6 the club is allocated games each week (at the beginning of the year).  We fill these with players from the teams (to umpire games adjacent or close to their own), or with non-playing umpires.  For the SEHA ED comp there is a pool of umpires which we also contribute non-playing and playing umpires to.

SEHA (ED) games are generally at Daceyville, Cintra (Burwood), Sutherland and Kyeemagh.

SWHL (ML) games are all over Sydney but with more centred around Olympic Park

Men’s - Saturday afternoon to evening

Sydney Hockey (Men's) also have a separate system (centrally allocated and paid for by the competition) of umpires should you wish to umpire mens games (mostly Saturday).  Generally centrally allocated umpires would need to be available most weeks of the season (i.e. regular) and the coordinator will roster you around your own playing game (should you be a mens comp player).

At various times of the year there will also be games where the club needs to provide umpires to our own or adjacent games.  During these times we will generally use umpires from the club in adjacent games.
