It's that time of year again!

 

| WHAT |

There's nothing worse than going for a dive and being greeted by plastic bottles, drink cans, rubber shoe soles, takeaway coffee cup lids, etc. The widespread pollution of plastics and the emergence of the 'plastispehere' (scary stuff!) is catastrophic for both marine health and our own. Come join your fellow diving enthusiasts and ocean lovers at the UNSW Underwater Clubs own 'Clean Up Dive'!

 

The plan is to go out for a dive and collect as much plastic rubbish as we can. We will then be reporting our collection to Project Aware citizen science program Dive Against Debris. This will involve weighing and classifying the rubbish using their data card, and we'll need your help for this!

 

| WHO |

Normally, you must be a member to join UNSW UWC events. As we want to get as many people involved in this, the event is open to all students and members of the community who aren't UNSW UWC members.

 

You can be:

* A diver (must be certified);

* A snorkeler or free diver;

* A beach stroller to help collect the rubbish from sand and surrounding areas

Camp Cove, Watsons Bay

 

| HOW |

While membership isn't needed to participate in the event, membership is required to hire any diving and/or snorkelling gear. You can become a member by following this link - https://www.revolutionise.com.au/underwaterclub/registration/ (registration lasts from the date of sign up to February the following year and gives you access to all future social and dive events, as well as our crazy cheap gear hire).

There are over 20 full sets of diving and snorkelling gear available - first in best dressed. Gear is hired out weekly and is available for pickup on the Tuesday or Thursday before between 6-6:30pm from our gear shed on campus. Dive gear:

BCD - $10/week

Tanks (hired out empty) - $10/week

Set of regulators - $10/week

Set of weights - $5/week

 

Snorkel gear:

Pair of fins - $10/week

Mask and snorkel - $10/week

Wetsuit - $10/week

 

ProDive Coogee have kindly offered to support our clean up by offering free air fills. We're working on getting some free fills at other dive shops so we'll keep you posted!
