Sail Tumby Yardstick Points Race

Published Mon 13 Mar 2023

The inaugural Sail Tumby Yardstick Points Race was run and won on Saturday, 11 March 2023 as part of the Colour Tumby festival. 18 sailors from Port Lincoln, Coffin Bay and Tumby Bay competed in the new format. The format provided for some very close results and some good fun racing.

Abbie McPharlin took out the Optimist class from Hazel Moss. Hazel established an early lead but Abbie was able to chase her down and take a narrow victory. Xavier McPharlin came in third place not far behind. They were followed by Alec Moss.

In the yardstick event Peter and Deanna Henderson in the 125 Shine On finished the two heats with 38.13 points to narrowly beat Terry Carlson, Wade Langmead and Rusty Lowe in their new sharpie Beer Group Pressure who finished with 38.00 points. Both teams sailed well all day in the 10-15 knot south-easterly breezes. In third place was Chris Trenberth in the 125 Knotstok who sailed with Abbie McPharlin in heat 1 and Hazel Moss in heat 2. They were followed by Stan and Alec Moss in the 125 Rubidium, Will van Riet in the International Cadet Usain Bolt, Marc Marschall and Seb Drewer in the Sundance 4.3 catamaran Dobbs and David Clayfield in the foiling Skeeta Wings.

Special mention to eight year old Alec Moss who completed all four races on the day sailing in both an Optimist and a 125. He completed 27 laps for the day! That is a lot of tacks and gybes!

A big thank you to Jennifer Moss and Prue McPharlin for running the racing on the water, and Rob Randall and Ryan Merrett for doing the scoring in the bridge.

Thanks also to Ox and the team at Nutrien Ag Solutions Tumby Bay for sponsoring the day!
