Foundations for Tigers Hockey Club were laid in 1963 when Graham Phillis, who was heavily involved with Wanderers Hockey Club, decided on a name change to Tigers and thus an A Grade Men’s team was established.
A year later, a second A Grade men’s team was established and named Cubs. These two teams continued playing against each other in the A Grade Men’s competition until 1973 when Cubs was disbanded.
In 1972, a Men’s B grade team was formed utilising the services of mainly Grant High School students and the following year, East Women’s Hockey Club joined the Tiger’s men to become the first combined hockey club in the region.
In 1976, a women’s B grade team was formed from wives, sisters, friends and relatives of men’s team members as a social team, to learn the game they had been supporting for years.
Later, the club’s C grade teams were formed in 1979, with the women winning the premiership in their debut year.
In 1985, the club again fielded two A grade men’s team – Tigers Black and Tigers Gold. As well as two B grade teams consisting of a more mature aged group of men.
This core of players has been the basis of continued player growth and strength with many still playing alongside sons, daughters, nieces and nephews.
The LSEHA created two B grade divisions in 1986 with Tigers opting to field teams in both, but only one A grade team.
The Under 15 boys’ competition began in 1991 and the girls a year later with Tigers fielding teams in both.
Today, the club continues to field teams in each of the Lower South East Hockey Association’s (LSEHA), Senior and Junior Divisions.
