This is an inclusive sailing program created with the intention of warmly welcoming individuals of all abilities. This includes participants with disabilities, individuals with special needs and Individuals facing ongoing health challenges .The primary goal of this program is to promote a pathway of inclusion that ensures all participants have an encouraging, supportive, and enjoyable experience while learning to sail.
Who can join?
These sessions are open to anyone aged 18 and older. Participants are encouraged to sail independently, with a companion, or with the assistance of a carer.
The program consists of a structured 3-day course where individuals will acquire the fundamentals of sailing. An experienced instructor will lead the course, providing relevant knowledge and assisting participants on the water from a powerboat.
- Topics covered during the course include:
- Clothing and safety equipment
- Boat components
- Rigging (preparing the boat for sailing)
- Steering techniques and sailing various courses
To facilitate the needs of participants who may require assistance getting in and out of the sailing boats, we have a C-Crane available during these programs.

Course Overview
This course introduces participants to dinghy sailing and its fundamental skills so they learn terminology and equipment and practice launching and returning to shore and capsize recovery.

Water confident.
Who should do this course?
This course is designed for participants who wish to begin sailing in a dinghy. All the equipment and gear will be provided by your accredited Discover Sailing Centre.
Course Outcome
You will gain your Start Sailing 1 completion certificate.
We recognise that some of our course participants are completing the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award and may be using sailing and/or club membership to complete one or more sections of The Award. To learn more, click here.
