Stingers Update - April 2021

Published Fri 16 Apr 2021

Winter is coming!

It's getting a bit chilly out there, but Stingers training Saturday and Sunday will continue as we prepare for winter METRO and the launch of our new INTRA comp, and I don't know about you but right about now I'm glad we are indoors! Starting tomorrow, we will be launching 4 weeks of specific skills sessions targeted at grading and forming winter METRO teams. See the initial post and our clarifying post with more detail in Stingers Members for more details. If you don't want to do METRO, grading sessions are still a great way to get feedback on your skills and potential, and Sunday all in skills training will also still be available. Since last year we have doubled the training time available with greater flexibility than ever before; make the most of it!

Which house will you be in this winter?

Be on the watch!

But not necessarily the Night's Watch. There's a lot going on, so don't miss these announcements and things.

  • All-in training continues Sunday at Gunyama Park | While we work through grading and prep for winter, book in for all-in skills training every Sunday to train with Stingers of all levels!
  • Mouthguards, medals and all the material things | If you are missing something material, like shiny new club swimmers, an ordered mouthguard or a hard-earned award from summer season, find Dylan over the next few weeks at training sessions.
  • Rainbow Grudge Match is on in Brisbane 1 May 2021! | Epic numbers of Stingers have expressed interest in Rainbow Grudge Match on 1 May in Brisbane. We will be sending out a follow-up Stingers registration form soon so the club can create teams to compete against our sister clubs. Don't forget to stick around for Big Gay Day on Sunday 2 May!
  • WPA Masters Comp 26-29 May 21| WPA is hosting a masters comp for teams with an average age of 30 or above in the Gold Coast at the end of May. It's a great opportunity to play against other teams from across Australia. Check it out >
  • Hong Kong 2022 Gay Games | Every 4 years the GayGames bring together people from across the world to compete in 30+ sports, and Hong Kong will be hosting the next iteration in Nov 2020. Start thinking now about whether you'd like to represent Sydney and the club. More info and details are coming soon.

INTRA - so hot right now

INTRA will be launching in May. It's our intention to continue to refine and develop our intraclub comp to provide every Stinger the opportunity to both train and play the sport. We are super excited to launch our first iteration of it - a short, sharp 6-7 week comp on Sunday evenings (earlier game time than metro games) at Gunyama with balanced teams and the opportunity to improve game skills for players, teams and even captains, coaches and refs. We want to provide all non-metro players a first option to play, and then extend this to our metro players.  Registration details coming soon! If you have questions, reach out to Ben or the coaches.

METRO - when you wanna go do it

METRO winter season will go from May to August as normal (exact dates TBC). New this season, our grading process is designed to allow us to form teams and then assess what grade we should enter. If you want to play in the metro comp, please attend the grading sessions so that this works. If you can't make it, please let the coaches now. Note that being on a metro team means you are committing to training and games each week so even if you hear "relax" - don't do it! If you have questions, reach out to Dylan, Bianca or the coaches.

Congrats again to our Summer Season Awards winners!
