It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Wayne Nelson, a treasured member of the Sutherland Shire Softball Association and an irreplaceable friend to many in our community. In the early hours of Thursday morning, Wayne lost his second and brief battle with cancer, leaving behind a legacy of loyalty, integrity, and an unwavering dedication to family, friends, and the sport of softball.
Wayne was a man of principle, a hard worker, and a devoted family man, known for his firm handshake and steady eye contact. He was the kind of person who would never pass you on the street without a warm greeting. In a world that moves quickly, Wayne’s old-school values made him a pillar of strength and consistency. His short yet remarkably full life was one of grit, passion, and unwavering devotion to the people and causes he loved.
In the softball world, Wayne was a “doer.” He joined countless times to coach and mentor SSSA representative teams, shaping young athletes into young men and women of character. For over a decade he instilled in our players respect for people, teammates, officials, spectators, and opponents—values that still resonate with athletes he coached today, long after the games and trophies. Wayne understood these lessons were more meaningful than any victory, and his impact will be felt for generations.
A fixture at working bees and volunteer events, Wayne would be the first to ask how he could lend a hand. His commitment went beyond the game; it extended to the entire community. Many have fond memories of Wayne on and off the field, fueled by his sense of humor and friendship. Wayne had a way of bringing laughter and life wherever he went, and his laugh and larger-than-life personality will be deeply missed.
Wayne's influence is woven into the very fabric of our association, and he leaves behind a legacy of kindness, humor, and strength. The ballpark in the sky just gained a true legend.
We extend our deepest sympathies to Wayne’s family during this difficult time. His spirit will live on in the Sutherland Shire Softball community, where he will forever be remembered as a stalwart, a respected gentleman, and an important part of the SSSA.
