South African Sailing - Safety Boat Operators Course

Course Overview

The South African Sailing Safety Boat course is essentially a tool to ensure that all operators of powerboats in the vicinity of sailors in a training, coaching or racing environment are able to interact safely and effectively with sailing boats as well as provide assistance such as aid in capsize recovery, recover person overboard and other typical situations.

Course Prerequisites

  • Be a minimum of 16 years of age
    South African recognised SAMSA and/or SA Sailing Certificate of Competence (CoC/Skippers Ticket)

Course Program

The SA Sailing Safety Boat Operators course follows a 2 full day program of teaching theory and testing the practical aspects of handling a safety boat and providing assistance to small craft in a safe manner and to World Sailing recognised standards. Candidates are also made aware of applicable safety and legal considerations for South African waters.

  • High Speed Manoeuvring Holding station
  • M.O.B.(Man overboard drills/techniques - getting person out of water)
  • General Rescue Procedure
  • Righting Single Handed Dinghies
  • Righting Double Handed Dinghies
  • Righting Catamarans.
  • Rescuing Kites
  • Rescuing windsurfers & kayaks
  • Lee Shore Rescue

Practical and theory knowledge on how to handle and safely operate a powerboat in close quarters of small sailing vessels in a training and racing environment.

On Completion the successful delegates are presented with a SA Sailing Safety Boat Operators Certificate*

Course evaluation

Course delegates are briefed, debriefed and assessed on an ongoing basis throughout the duration the course to maximize on learning opportunities through the program.

All course delegates are required to pass a practical assessment at the end of the course.

SA Sailing takes a Course Fee per R385 attendee.

Any other fees charged are done so independently by the Safety Boat instructor  as they deem necessary to facilitate running the program.
