The 2024 Australian Country Championships concluded with a whirlwind of excitement and fierce competition, showcasing the exceptional talent and determination of water polo players from across the country. Sunshine Coast Water Polo (SCWP) is proud to highlight the outstanding performances of our athletes who represented the Sunshine Coast in each of the Queensland teams.
In the men’s division, the QLD Maroon team delivered a stellar performance, clinching the bronze medal with a decisive 10-6 victory. Congratulations to our Sunshine Coast players Flynn, Harry, Rhys, Sam, Josh, & Kai for their incredible contributions.
The QLD Navy and QLD Gold men’s teams faced off in a dramatic battle for seventh place. Both teams demonstrated remarkable skill and determination, leading to an intense penalty shootout. After each team taking 11 shots, the QLD Navy team emerged victorious with a final score of 13-12 to take the win. Hats off to Liam, Hugo, Zac, & Aaden from the QLD Gold team, who fought valiantly in this nail-biting match, and congrats to Gia & Thomas from the QLD Navy.
In the women’s division, the QLD Maroon team played a fantastic gold medal match against NSW. In a closely contested game, NSW narrowly edged out QLD with a score of 15-13. We are immensely proud of our Sunshine Coast players, Claire and Lucy, for their dedication and outstanding efforts, earning a silver medal for their team.
The QLD Gold women’s team showcased their resilience in a thrilling penalty shootout against VIC. Despite a tough game, QLD emerged triumphant with a 12-14 victory, securing fifth place. Well done, Anais, Madi, & Macey, for giving it your all until the end.
Two of the Sunny Coast's women were drafted into the ADF team, finishing seventh. Well done Keira & Mia.
A special congratulations to Claire M for being named in the prestigious Tournament 7 – Women's. This accolade is a testament to her exceptional skill and dedication throughout the championships.
Overall, the 2024 Australian Country Championships were a showcase of top-tier water polo, with both men’s and women’s divisions featuring intense and competitive matches. The tournament saw incredible performances from teams across the country, culminating in nail-biting finishes and memorable moments.
SCWP is incredibly proud of all our athletes who competed in the championships. Your hard work, sportsmanship, and dedication have made us proud, and we are thrilled to see such strong representation from the Sunshine Coast.
