Hunt surprises Cross Country field at Sportspower 5000m

Published Sat 23 Apr 2022

Jess Hunt surprised the field when she triumphed over experienced runner Peter Gibson for a dash to the finish line at the Shane and Robyn Young Sportspower 5000m Handicap at Stawell on Sunday.  Only 5 seconds split the two at the finish. Jess said she was very nervous to start the race as she has only completed 1 park run and not run competitively before. Pete had started behind Jess in the handicap starts. He had caught her on the uphill parts but the young knees of Jess benefited her in the downhill sections.

With 500 metres to go, both passed Nicki Blackie who had a steady pace across the race and finished third. Gabe Tonks showed his potential again after a delayed start the previous race, to come home as the fastest runner on course with Tessa Thompson the fastest Female. The morning was warmer than what our winter cross country runners were used to but the beauty of the Ironbark reserve is always a favourite place for runners to enjoy.

Our timekeepers Gail and Julie were kept busy with majority of runners finishing within a 2-minute span.  Thanks to Steve Baird, our newest life member, who marked the beautiful course this week.
