NSTC Update - July 2024

The 2024 winter season started with a flurry of excitement as the NSTC was officially opened on 7 June.   The Premier of NSW, Chris Minns along with Steve Whan MP, The Honourable Kristy McBain, Snow Australia CEO Michael Kennedy and Mogul skier Jakara Anthony were all in attendance to cut the red ribbon and to announce the John Langley Hancock Building officially open.

Prior to the NSTC Official Opening, the morning commenced with a Breakfast of Champions for 130 invited guests, to highlight and honour retired athletes, Zali Steggall (Alpine), Ramone Cooper (Moguls), Ben Sim (Cross Country) and James Millar (Para Cross Country) who were presented with their Snow Australia medals which are presented to those who finished in the top three at a FIS World Cup or World Championships, and/or represented Australia at the Olympic or Paralympic Winter Games.

Forty-two athletes from eight different disciplines converged on the NSTC in late May and were inducted into the 2024 cohort of Snow Australia’s Emerging Talent Program. Throughout the 2-day camp, athletes were exposed to many of the high-performance themes our elite skiers and snowboarders carry with them on the world stage. This camp was one of many which will be staged over the course of the 2024 season.

The Alpine and Ski Cross Emerging Talent athletes attended the first of the discipline specific ETP camps to be held during the season. Eight athletes took part in physical testing to identify their current physical state and set benchmarks to work towards during the season. Snow Australia strength and conditioning coach, Layne Flannery, subjected the athletes to a battery of tests to assist in their development towards their on-snow goals.

Snow Australia Recognised Pathway Providers are already making use of the NSTC utilising both the Park and Acro facilities as part of their winter training.  Thredbo Ski Race Club (TSRC) and Falls Creek Race Club (FCRC) have both attended air bag and acro sessions this month with FCRC being the first club from VIC to make the trip across the border.  Both Clubs had a great time, working and on their skills and refining their tricks ready to hit the snow.

La Skill, Turn & Burn and Thredbo Mountain Academy (TMA) athletes have also commenced their season long training at the NSTC Park along with Moguls program athletes accessing NSTC Acro sessions on a weekly basis.  Scots College will soon commence their 8-week school program during the winter.

PARK Update

Park sessions will continue over the school holidays with both Development and High-Performance bags open during all scheduled sessions. This will give more opportunities for visitors to the snow to have the best of both worlds and be on snow in the morning and jump on the airbag in the afternoon!

Please note there is a change of time for the airbag and Intro2Plastic sessions for July.  Intro2Plastic will commence at 1.45pm with airbag sessions commencing immediately after at 2.30pm until 5pm. This change is due to the low afternoon light which occurs at this time of the year. Times will shift back in August as the days start to get a little longer.

Guests will have use of the Clubhouse facilities, including the changerooms and lockers while spectators can spend time on the viewing deck to get the best viewing experience of both airbag landings and capture all the action shots!

We now have a small variety of drinks and snacks available for purchase at the check-in counter of the NSTC Park along with merchandise items for sale including drink bottles, hats, caps, tees and hoodies all showcasing the NSTC logo.

Don’t forget that airbag specific wax is also available for purchase to assist in prepping your equipment prior to arriving for your airbag sessions. Alternatively, our experienced NSTC staff can wax your equipment onsite for a small cost.

For details on sessions and equipment requirements, please go to the NSTC Park webpage
