Cross Country Director Update - June 2023 |
Dear XC Skiers,
The following links provide a good reason for smiling faces as we head into the June/July school holidays.
From the National Team side, our first on-snow camp of the season is currently underway at Falls Creek. Twenty athletes and four coaches are on-site for five days of mostly base training and technique development. During these school holidays VICXC also has a 5-day junior training camp at Falls Creek, while NSW/ACT XC are running training for all levels at Perisher over a 3-week period.
In the coming weeks Snow Australia will be running two on-snow technique workshops for current and prospective coaches, one at Falls Creek and one at Perisher. These workshops count towards the Level 1 Cross Country Coach Accreditation, with some generic components being available online via the Snow Academy. Eligible coaches may put in expressions of interest to be part of the international programs that Snow Australia plans to operate at the end of the year.
Though the coming months hold plenty of racing opportunities for participants at all levels, I would encourage juniors in particular to find time to challenge their skills both on and off-track. Turn a ski session into an adventure by going somewhere new or cutting some teles on an un-tracked slope. If you only have limited time to get on snow, pick and choose races so that some skiing is for fun and it's not just all racing.
For the latest racing information we are now directing all traffic to the Snow Australia XC events page, which is the first step towards migrating all other cross country skiing content across from the old AUSXC site. During this transition period we welcome input into improving communication to and from the cross country community - please feel free to reach out to me via fmarsland@snow.org.au or to chat directly if you see me on snow.
All the best in skiing,
Finn Marsland
Cross Country Skiing Program Director

Falls Creek National Team Camp |
Snow conditions at the annual National Team June on-snow camp at Falls Creek are often hit and miss. This year, nearly a metre of snow over the past week and a half has set up the tracks well, enabling 30 of tracks to be groomed and ready for some good endurance training. Coaches Alexei Sotskov, Victoria Sotskov, John Max Ertner and Robbie Catto-Smith have twenty athletes on-site for five days of mostly base training and technique development.
Click through for some images from the camp so far, with more to be added as the week progresses.
