It is with great sadness that we report the death of our Spiral sailing mate, Shane Navin. He was, at the time, competing in the Targa Tasmania motor sport event for which he and his navigator Glenn Evans were regular entrants. Along with sailing, motor sport was a lifelong passion for Shane.
Growing up in the Cronulla area his sailing started crewing on yachts as a kid. He and a mate then started in skiffs out of Burraneer Bay. In January this year, he was instrumental in getting a group of us down to Bundeena to enjoy a sail on the waters he grew up on.
Shane returned to Sydney after some time in Melbourne, sailing Sabres, and continued sailing a Sabre out of Connells Point. On a visit to CRSC he discovered Spiral’s and bought one soon after. He became a member of CRSC in 2005 and was a regular competitor despite travelling from the Blue Mountains. Shane also reputedly started the trend of wearing a helmet whilst sailing after more than one too many blows from the boom!
Shane also joined the Spiral Association in 2005, stepping up to the Committee in 2009 and President in 2011. During his time chairing meetings, he would merge his love of Porches into the meetings, endeavouring to end meetings in a time invoking a Porsche model. 9:11 was a common aim, 9:24 likewise and, fortunately for the comittee, rarely 9:44!
Our thoughts are with Shane’s wife, Jennifer, and his family, as they come to terms with their loss.
