IT’S A SEASON WRAP!

BYRA MARATHON.

On Sunday 1 May the Traveller’s Trophy concluded at BYRA with the Peter Loft Marathon.  The rain cleared for a beautiful day, apart from the wind taking its clue from the rain and also clearing for the Le Mans start, so we all had a tide assist drift to Palm Beach where we got our shortened course signal and the breeze as well!  The fleet then had a delightful work back to the beach, then a short sprint to ring the bell for the finish.

I suspect Spirals had the biggest fleet and we punched above our yardstick among the multitude of other classes.  After packing up there was still time for refreshments and another chance to catch up with everyone on the poop deck before the long drive home, or sail home for the Avalon sailors.

First home was Peter Eslick followed by Tim Vandervoort and Renee Rawson.

FINAL  T.T. RESULTS.

It has been quite a series with Covid and even road closures doing their best to interrupt the events so it is congratulations to Grae Baker for staying ahead of the game and not only putting together another good season, but keeping it together!

Well done Tim Vandervoort (884) – winning the 2021-22 Travellers Trophy series on Scratch with 3.25 points, being awarded average points for missing three races due to Covid restrictions, and participating in every TT race possible during the season.

Peter Newman (853) and Peter Eslick (912) – tying on second place on scratch with 6 points. The battle for second place was taken right to the ringing of the bell, with Peter E. catching and passing Peter N. to win the Peter Loft Marathon, and getting one more bonus point deduction for the series.

A big congratulations to Tegan Franklin – winning the 2021-22 Travellers Trophy on Handicap, sailing more consistently better through the season, and travelling to every TT race.

Peter Newman (853) and Tim Vandervoort (884) – tying on second place, carrying the highest handicaps and both achieving several wins on scratch.

The 2021-22 season has again been complicated by Covid restrictions and the weather.  It has been one of the most challenging, most competitive, and best supported seasons.  Congratulations to both of the well-deserving winners, and all the participants. WINTER SAILING

If you are keen on sailing through winter Callala has racing listed each Saturday this month then the first Saturday of June, July, August and September, then 17 and 24 September as warm ups for the October Regatta.  Check their website.  Dobroyd Aquatic Club once again welcomes Spirals to their winter series held over the first Saturday of each of the next three months. The first event held in May saw 8 Spirals sailing the three races. At least our winter sailing is much warmer than the U.K. where a Laser sailor told me their club sails right through, but he stops in January because the ice damages the gel coat!

USED SPIRALS NEEDED!

Otherwise do any maintenance over winter and if you, or someone you know has a Spiral not being used, why not sell it? As I said last month, there is a shortage of used boats, particularly at the lower end of the market, and this is where we get new members.  So a shortage of these boats does hurt the class which we all love.

COMMITTEE NEWS

Last committee meeting Mark McConnell outlined his progress on the thankless task of updating our Constitution and Class Regulations which will be an ongoing process over winter.  Thank you Mark.
