The circumstances athletes found themselves in were not ideal going from extreme heat one day to blustery cold and wet conditions the next,  yet many of our dual registered athletes performed very well.  Nine Dual registered south Sydney senior Athletes competed and as a squad we came away with 9 medals and one “broken leg “. Our tally was 1 gold two silver and six bronze so I guess you could call it a ‘bronzeathon’?

In the U / 17 events Tom Gray running for Balmain in extremely gusty conditions ran a great tactical race to pick up gold in the boys U/17 800m. Randwick Botany representatives, Owen Richardson again in extremely gusty conditions picked up silver in the U/ 17 400m, while  Tate Allen picked up bronze in the U/17 200m and  Imogen Grant hampered by the fact that ‘conditions’ led officials to make all events timed finals despite winning her 400m heat convincingly did not get a chance to compete for a medal.

In the U / 15’s Lachlan Grant picked up silver in the 400m and Bronze in the 800m. In the Under 14’s Anastasia Watson picked up bronze in the 200m and was just pipped into 4th in the 100m. In the U13’s Erin Fung recovered from almost falling at the first turn to pick up silver in the 800m and ran a PB to pick up bronze in the 1500m and in the midst of a torrential down pour after all age groups were combined picked up 5th in the 3000m which at times looked more like the charge of the light brigade than a athletics track event.

In the Under 10’s Daniel Morrow running for Eastern Suburbs picked up bronze in the 400m and in the U/10 Amelie Evans   despite putting in a strong performance  in difficulty conditions to win her heat missed out at an attempt at the medals because of the timed final system

Our commiserations and condolences go out to Kieran Fung who inexplicably broke his tibia whilst running in to take a  high Jump. Hopefully he will make a quick recovery and be back training soon and the full leg cast won’t be to much of an imposition. Even if some of his team mates suggested it was novel way of getting out of running a 3000m race….lol

South Sydney Senior athletes now turn their focus to the NSW Junior  Championships which is an opportunity to qualify for Nationals which will be held at SOPAC . Athletes can qualify by running a qualifying time either before the Junior Championships or at the Junior Championships or finishing first second or third at the NSW Junior Championships.
