In the lead up to this event as well as the Little Athletics Regional and State Championships South Sydney members have ben attempting to get in as much competition as possible. Just prior to Christmas at the Crest Basnkstown, With the temperature at 39 degrees Anastasia Watson (13) 13.34 and Ava Kuehn (14) 13.56 ran in the 4th heat of the Athletics NSW Bankstown All-Comers Women’s 100 Metre running respectable times given the oppressive conditions. Anastasia backed up in the Women’s 200 Metre, running 27.66. It was Anastasia’s debut at a senior event while Ava has been a regular attendee since joining the club. Well done ladies, both can look forward to tough competition and improved times in the New Year.
In time for the Albie Thomas program, around 5.30pm, a southerly change came through dropping the temperature to the mid-20s, while this was welcomed the accompanying wind of 35 kms, gusting at 55 kms brought a different challenge.
Kieran Fung (14) who plans to run the 2000m steeplechase in 2020,in preparation for that, ran in the Men 3000 Metre Run Community B Race, in the lead pack all the way he finished third in his goal time of 10:30. Imogen Grant (16) won the Women’s 400 Metre C Race running her best time for a while. Owen Richardson (16) ran in the Men’s 400 Metre B Race and ran a new PB time of 52.39. Lachlan Grant (14) ran in the Men’s 800 Metre D Race clocking 2:09.23 in tough conditions.
This was the best attended event by the Club so far this year with all saying they will run in more events in the New Year. They initially planned to run in the Treloar Shield event whichwas be held on the 4th January, 2020 at SOPAC however this event was cancelled due to oppresive wethaer conditions .
As a consequence a number of Athletes have decided to run at the2019 Illawarra Track Challenge on Sat 11 Jan 2020 at the Kerryn McCann Athletic Centre.
On the same day if it suits better there ias also a All Comers event at - Mingara at the Mingara Regional Athletics Centre
