Flying Fifteen Try Sailing Day
Want to experience the thrill of sailing a Flying Fifteen yacht, then come on down to the South of Perth Yacht Club (“SoPYC”) centreboard clubhouse forecourt on Sunday 24th November from 9.30 am to have a go. Our volunteers will be ready to take you out onto Melville Waters to experience what it's like to race in a Flying Fifteen.
Wear shorts, a rash top or similar and trainers. Buoyancy vests will be provided if you don't have one.
Our volunteer boat owners will be onsite and available to have a chat regardless of the weather. So, if you want to learn more and are curious about one of the largest active fleets at SoPYC, come along! A free sausage sizzle provided by the Flying Fifteen Class Association will be available for participants and their accompanying family members.
To register your interest please complete the registration form by clicking HERE. Availability is limited so get in early.
We look forward to seeing you for a sail.
Want to know more?
Flying Fifteens are one of the largest active sailing fleets at SoPYC with over 20 in the fleet sailing regularly. Several of our boats are family affairs, husband/ wife or father/daughter combos. It's a is 2-person yacht with a keel (making it hard to get really wet i.e., capsize). 6.1 m long, and 15 feet at the waterline (this is where the "15" comes from!) and at a little over 300Kgs the boat on its trailer can easily be towed by a normal sedan.
The boat is ideal for beginners and those returning to competitive one design class sailing after university and starting a family who do not like capsizes.
• The Flying Fifteen is a 2 person racing yacht
• It has a keel which makes it easier to sail than a racing dinghy and less likely to send you swimming
• It only needs 2 people to sail, several crews are husband & wife teams.
• The Flying Fifteen is an International Class recognised by World Sailing.
This is a brilliant boat for getting back to sailing with many willing mentors for support within the fleet at SoPYC. Crewing is ideal for beginners wanting to learn all there is to know about sailing. The fleet at South of Perth are a competitive bunch and within the fleet there's a broad spectrum of sailing abilities, so you will always have someone to race against, regardless of where you are in the fleet.
But it's not all about sailing! The SoPYC fleet prides itself on its social program and has many opportunities and events throughout the year for getting together off the water and socially!
Still keen? Complete the registration form or just come down and meet our fleet volunteers on Sunday 24th November from 9.30 am. For further information please contact Andrew (our fleet representative) for a chat on 0408932516 or send him an email at sopycf15@gmail.com
