As the only Sport Australia (Australian Sports Commission - https://www.sportaus.gov.au) recognised NSO for Skate, Skate Australia has the authority to create, implement and deliver this Roller Derby Coaching Accreditation Course. Skate Australia and its affiliated State Associations are the only organisations authorised to conduct this course.  

 

About the Level 1 Roller Derby Coach Accredited Course

1. Duration of Training Program

  • 5 hours face to face training, plus pre-reading

2. Who should attend this course?

  • This course is designed to provide training for coaches involved in roller derby at the beginner and intermediate level.   
  • All coaches and officials who require Professional Indemnity Insurance must hold qualifications and a sports specific accreditation certificate issued by a Sport Australia recognised National Sporting Organisation (NSO).  
  • Only recognised National Sporting Organisations (NSOs) such as Skate Australia Limited are responsible for the design and implementation of coaching frameworks for Skate sports in 
    Australiaof which Roller Derby is one.
  • This course is intended for: 
    • All Skate Queensland and Skate Australia members that either currently coach (compulsory), assist with coaching, interested in coaching and have the skating skill to do so.

3. Payment of Coaching Course Fees

  • All participants must pay the training program fee at time of registration, before commencing their training.
  • All fees include Skate Australia administration and accreditation fees, compulsory texts, Sports Education registration fee and other course costs such as presenter costs, facility hire and equipment.

4. Entry Pre-Requisites

  • All participants must be a Competitive or Development member of Skate Australia
  • Participants will need to complete and pass the free online Sport Australia Community Coaching Essential Skills Course prior to attending the accreditation clinic. A copy of the certificate of completion must be emailed to rollerderby@skateaustralia.org.au at least 1 week before the start of the course.
  • Participants who will be working with participants under 18 years of age will also need to have a Working with Children card (In Queensland, a Blue Card), and have completed the Play by the Rules Child Protection and Safeguarding Course prior to attending the accreditation clinic.  A copy of your Blue Card and PBTR certificate must be emailed to rollerderby@skateaustralia.org.au at least 1 week before the start of the course.
  • There are no other entry pre-requisites for the Level 1 Course but it is assumed that participants have an understanding of the sport of roller derby.

5. Physical screening check

  • Participants in this course are required to show that they are competent in utilising coaching techniques suitable to the sport of roller derby. Additionally, the written communication will ask that they provide written description of any injuries or medical conditions that may affect their active participation in any way.

6. Pre-course study/preparation

  • Certain materials will be sent to the candidate prior to the course.
  • The required text is recommended reading prior to the course, and the needs analysis is to be completed and returned prior to attending the course.

7. Age of entry into the program.

  • Minimum age to attend is 14.
  • Candidates must be 16 years of age on completion of all Level 1 requirements to be eligible for registration.  In order to coach any groups over the 18 years of age will require pre-approval from the league and Skate Australia.
  • Note. Coaches completing the course before their 16th birthday (Level 0) are restricted to coaching in class situation only, under the supervision of a fully accredited coach Level 1. Once they reach their 16th birthday, a fully accredited coach can confirm their suitability to progress to Level 1 to coach on their own.

8. Attendance Requirements

  • Candidates must attend all sessions of the course component of the training program in order to be eligible for accreditation.
