Ron Macbeth (1933-2017)
After a successful baseball career in NSW both as a state player and coach Ron moved to Adelaide with his work. He became involved in the Sturt Baseball Club with his son playing in 1972.
Ron was heavily involved as a coach at a junior level and established the hugely successful Pee Wee Competition with the Sturt All-Stars representing South Australia for many years at the National Titles.
He became the club’s Junior Coordinator with a focus on kid’s enjoyment and skill development. Ron incorporated a Saturday morning Primary School Competition which began to see large numbers of juniors coming through the club.
His involvement and dedication to our juniors came with great success both on the field and off. His developmental way with training and encouraging kids in our sport made a large impact on baseball in SA. Ron was awarded a Mitcham Council Award for his work in encouraging kids to be involved in sport.
Ron was highly respected by all members of the SA Baseball League. A Junior Competition is named after him. He dedicated his life to coaching all age groups at Sturt and was always available to help anyone who asked. We all have a lifelong memory of Ron sitting in his Bull Pen working with the next up and coming pitcher. The 'Ron Macbeth Bullpen' is situated along the first base line, between the diamond and clubhouse.
Ron Macbeth was announced as Sturt Baseball Club's first inductee into the Baseball SA 'Hall of Fame' at the inaugural dinner on May 20, 2022.
Ron Macbeth Award
Ron was willing to help anyone that was keen to learn. He never distinguished between those who were talented to those who found baseball a little more challenging.
Ron always focused on the basics with balance being a key word whether batting, fielding or pitching.
In honour of Ron Macbeth the club in consultation with the Macbeth family have created the Ron Macbeth Junior Award. All junior players within our club are eligible to win this award.
Junior Coaches will be asked to nominate one player from their team who displayed the following qualities throughout the season.
- Keen to learn
- Persistence
- Follows direction of coaches
- Respectful (to fellow players, coach, manager, officials)
- Team oriented
- Puts in the extra training to reach goals
- Always has a go
- Presents themselves well on the field – uniform, come ready to play
- Stays positive even when things are not going their way
- Never lets the opposition see any weakness (positive demeanour)
The Management Committee will make a decision as to who is to receive the award each season.
