Making Waves Foundation sets sail for the 22nd time in the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race with 50% crew living with disability
The Making Waves Foundation proudly announces its participation in the 22nd Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, featuring a crew composed of 50% individuals living with disability.
These crew members representing each of the Making Waves ports: Al Grundy (Sydney), James Hunter (Sydney), David Preston (Brisbane) and Siang Beh (Sydney and Newcastle). This momentous achievement supports the Making Waves Foundation’s commitment to inclusivity and empowering our community through sailing.
As a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to providing sailing opportunities for individuals living with disability or experiencing disadvantage, our journey begins with the Noakes Sydney Southport Yacht Race, commencing from Cruising Yacht Club of Australia to Southport Yacht Club on 27th July 2024.
From 15th June 2024, our crew members, both with and without disabilities, will undergo intensive training and preparation to ensure a competitive performance in this gruelling race and four of the five lead-up Blue Water Pointscore races.
“I am honoured to be able to embark on this campaign to build together as a crew that exemplifies courage, determination, and unity,” remarked John Whitfeld, skipper of the Making Waves Foundation Yacht ‘Kayle'. This will be John’s 30th Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.
“By participating in events like the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, we aim to hopefully inspire others and advocate for greater inclusivity both in the sailing and the wider community.”
