General Manager - Tasmania Monthly Update October 2023

Published Wed 18 Oct 2023

I must start with mentioning Mersey Yacht Club having their 100th Opening Day on Saturday 13th October. Something to be proud of and well worth celebrating! MYC have a display of memorabilia in their clubhouse for people to visit and learn about the history of the Club and are interested in getting in touch with any past members.

On the same weekend, but in the south of the state, AS held their Zhik Youth Sail TAS event held at The Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania from 12th-15th. Over a four-day period we had more than 70 sailors participate in the two day coaching clinic, followed by a two day Championship. Unfortunately, the weather was not on our side, and we had to contend with blustery winds and rain from all directions. This made racing tricky (and particularly annoying for the Race Officer and Mark Layers) and limited the races completed. However, our coaching days were productive and enjoyed and sailors were coached by some of the best in the country.  A highlight of the coaching clinic was having Olympian sailor, Tom Squires, and Australian Sailing Team member, Luke Elliott, giving talks that inspired every sailor listening. Overall, the event was very successful, and I would like to personally thank the RYCT for hosting the event and all the volunteers involved. TAS Youth Sail Results

The Learn to Wing Experience, is essentially the first 3.5hrs of the full course, and can be delivered either as a stand-alone experience, or as part of an OutThere Sailing offering. It is completely up to your club or DSC how you wish to utilise the Experience in your environment.  To assist clubs and centres further with the delivery of the program, Australian sailing has sourced a 50% discount on equipment for DSC’s through a partnership with North Action Group. If your DSC would like to access the deal, please contact Sylvain Mitault direct at NAG, via email or phone, salesau@northasg.com / 0424 681 859.
