General Update

Over the past 12 months I have been working with Marine Safety Queensland, RQYS, Moreton Bay Trailer Boat Club and Wynumm Manly Sailing Club to finalise the addition of four fixed marks in Moreton Bay.  I am pleased to report that in early July we finalised the agreement with MSQ and AS and then an MOU between AS and the three clubs.  The marks are due to be installed in September and are a great investment into infrastructure for the future.

Grant and Alison attended the Sport and Recreation Forum on the Sunshine Coast to build their network in the region in particular with Regional Councils.  One of the big topics was about Sport Volunteers with discussions around keeping clubs open and communities active.

In July we held the 2023 Training in Focus - Live event.  It was well attended and a great opportunity for Instructors, Discover Sailing Centre Principles and Training administrators to receive hands-on learning via workshops and practical on water activities.

Queensland Sailing Awards

Congratulations to all the finalists for the 2023 Queensland Sailing Awards. This year the larg focus for nominations was the SheSails Award, Youth Sailor of the Year and of course our very valued Volunteers.  I’m sure it was very difficult voting for the Yachting Queensland board with such a high calibre of nominations.

You can view a list of all the finalists here

So now it’s time to celebrate the achievements of our finalists and congratulate the winners at a gala event with three course meal, held at Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron on Thursday 7th September from 6:30pm.

Everyone is welcome to attend and you can purchase your tickets here: https://www.sailing.org.au/events/156832/

Action Item/s for Club:

  • Book a table and come and celebrate the Queensland Sailing Community

Youth Sail Queensland

We have just gone past 150 boats on the weekend that are registered as we countdown to Youth Sail Queensland for 2023.  If you have youth sailors at your club, they should be attending this regatta.

Keppel Bay provides a great environment for learning, having fun in the sun and great race management for fair racing.  Olympian Mara Stransky is joining the coaching team which is very exciting.

Action Item/s for Club:

  • Make sure your junior and youth parents know about Youth Sail Queensland. Consider offering event support from your club. There are a lot of moving parts for a large regatta and your support will be much appreciated. There is plenty of information the on the website https://www.sailingyouth.org.au/qld-state-champs/

The value of collaboaration between different clubs and AS

Back in August 2021 the Clermont Community Business Group (CCBG) dreamt of a sailing event on their local Theresa Creek Dam with the goal ‘to open up this location to a new cohort of people that would otherwise never experience the beauty and wonder of this area’.

Between Australian Sailing and an enormous effort from Keppel Bay Sailing Club, the local Watersports Club and the Clermont community.  They achieved that dream.

Here’s a great story of what can be achieved when a small group of motivated and like-minded people get together and collaborate on what at first glance would appear to be an outlandish idea.

Action Item/s for Club:

  • Add collaboration to your committee meetings and ask the question:  How can you help someone else in our Queensland community?

If you are interested in the Learn to Wing Program, to assist clubs and centres further with the delivery of the program, Australian sailing has sourced a 50% discount on equipment for DSC’s through a partnership with North Action Group.
