Child Employment Clarification for Sporting Clubs in Victoria

Published Sun 22 Sep 2024

The Wage Inspectorate Victoria (WIV) has provided advice on child employment in community sports, stating that coaching, refereeing, or umpiring in low-risk sporting activities are not considered employment under Section 4A of the Child Employment Act 2003.

After consulting WIV, Erin confirmed that while most roles children take on, like coaching or officiating, fall within this exemption, other roles (such as ball kids) may require case-by-case assessment. Clubs unsure about specific roles involving children are encouraged to submit an application to WIV for clarification.

For more detailed advice, sporting organizations can reach out to WIV, known for their prompt responses.
