Event information
Take Your Skills to the Next Level with the Keelboat Skills Program!
Royal Geelong Yacht Club’s Keelboat Skills Program bridges the gap between our Learn to Sail courses and more advanced sailing opportunities, including casual sailing and club racing. This program offers a smooth transition to build skills, confidence, and connections on the water.
What You’ll Experience
The program is hosted on our fleet of RS21 club keelboats, creating a hands-on learning environment where new sailors and club members feel welcomed and supported. Each session focuses on essential skills tailored to your progression level—whether you're ready to crew, helm, or take the skipper’s seat.
Session Overviews
Our Skills Program sessions are designed specifically for graduates of an RGYC Keelboat Learn to Sail course, providing a focused pathway to expand on essential skills:
-
Boat Handling, Docking & Maneuvering: Gain confidence in the critical stages of setting off and returning, including docking under both sail and motor, picking up moorings, and enhancing keelboat handling skills that are vital for every voyage.
-
Sail Trim, Power, and Depowering: Learn how to effectively power up, depower, and optimize trim on both mainsails and headsails for varying conditions and points of sail, equipping you to sail efficiently and confidently.
-
Racing Fundamentals: This session prepares you to participate in racing, covering essential knowledge, resources, and practices for your first start line experience, whether it’s a casual Wednesday Twilight Race or your debut as a skipper.
-
Racing Practice: In the final session of 2024, join us for an RS21 Spring Members Series race day. Take part in 3-4 exhilarating races under the guidance of an experienced skipper, putting your skills to the test in a competitive setting to end the season on a high note.
If your chosen session is fully booked, contact the Sailing Academy at sailingacademy@rgyc.com.au, and we may be able to add another boat.
