Course information
Are you looking to build your confidence using spinnakers and ready to learn how to race? Join us for an accredited and structured Australian Sailing program with qualified instructors!
This course is suitable for all who have completed the Start Crewing and Helming course and are looking to further develop their skills and engage in racing, either as a crew member or by purchasing a yacht of their own OR have some experience sailing keelboats and wish to advance their skills. If you are unsure if your experience level will be suitable for this course please contact Shelley White to discuss.
The 5 sessions will cover the following:
Spinnaker
- Symmetric and asymmetric spinnakers
- The rigging of spinnakers
- Hoisting, trimming, gybing and dropping spinnakers
- Packing spinnakers for efficient use
- Advanced helming techniques
- Communication and teamwork
Keelboat Racing:
- Personal safety and clothing
- Correct use and knowledge of deck equipment
- Racing manoeuvres such as pre-start manoeuvring, roll tacking, roll gybing and mark roundings
- Advanced sail trim for all wind types
- Advanced balance and trim techniques required on board a racing yacht
- The structure of a race, including starting, course types and finishing
- Knowledge of the racing rules of sailing
- Communication and team work
- Physical fitness for sailing
Course Overview
This courses introduces you to the fun and challenge of using an asymmetrical and/or a symmetrical spinnaker.
Course Prerequisites
Water confident, and the skills, knowledge and experience gained in at least the Start Crewing and Start Helming courses.
Who should do this course?
This course is designed for participants who have grasped fundamental sailing skills and want to learn how to use spinnakers; asymmetrical and/or symmetrical.
Course Outcome
You will gain your Spinnakers completion certificate.
