Australian Waters Qualification (AWQ) VHF Radio Course
3 x Tuesday evenings 18:00 - 21:00 4 Sept | 11 Sept | 18 Sept

Event information

Registrations for this event are closed.

The Australian Waters Qualification (AWQ) radio course is for all boaties who use a VHF marine radio in Australian Territorial Waters (within 12 nautical miles of the coast). It provides an additional option to obtain a marine radio class license relevant to those who do not require the full Marine Radio Certificate of Proficiency.

We welcome all boaties, both sail and power, as well as volunteers to attend an AWQ course at Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club.

Course includes:

  • Learn the correct channels to use, and how and when to use them
  • Learn distress and safety procedures, including how to access search and rescue facilities
  • Learn how to respond to an emergency call
  • Learn how to make your messages understood so others know how to respond
  • Learn what DSC is and the benefits of connecting a GPS to your radio
  • Learn when and how to operate an EPIRB in a distress situation

The assessment of these competencies is in two sections: theory and practical.

The minimum age to obtain an AWQ qualification is 16 years.
