Course Overview

This course is aimed at teens 12-18 who have little to no sailing experience and builds up foundational skills essential for sailing. Youth Challenge encourages a love and talent for sailing in a social and relaxed environment.

• 12-18 years-old

Who should do this course?

This course is designed for participants who wish to have fun, make friends and, learn the basics of sailing.

Course Outcome

The completion checklist for Youth Challenge is:

• Wear correct clothes for sailing wind awareness & forecasts
• Tie - Figure 8, Reef, Bowline and half hitches
• Know rules - port/starboard, windward/leeward, always avoid, chain of rights
• Name all parts of boat
• Rig unassisted
• Use tiller extension with microphone grip
• Tack and gybe correctly
• Complete a 360 and 720
• Capsize recovery without help
• Learn no go zone and get out unassisted
• Know points of sail and appropriate trim
• Figure 8 course (tack/gybe)
• Complete triangle course
• Exhibit correct use of the kite
• Understand the importance of the 5 essentials

Once sailors can confidently demonstrate the above competencies they can move up to our Youth Skills training group!
