History

The Queensland Thunder was formed in 2018 after a Water Polo Australia review required the two Brisbane based teams – the Queensland Breakers and the Brisbane Barracudas - to form a single entity.    Every club in Queensland is now a feeder club to the Qld Thunder, and water polo players throughout Queensland strive to play for the Thunder as a pathway to selection in Australian junior and senior teams.

Tugan Water Polo Club was formed in 1963 and evolved to become Barracudas Water Polo Club and joined the national league competition in 1993.  To provide more opportunities for Queensland water polo players, the Queensland Breakers was formed in 2003 for players from any Queensland based clubs.  Combined, these clubs have won seven national league competitions (Barras women, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015; Barras men, 2004; Breakers men, 2007).

With that combined heritage, Queensland Thunder water polo formed to join the 2019 Australian Water Polo League, creating new history with both the men’s and women’s team making the 2019 final series, with our women’s team winning their inaugural championship in their first year.

These two clubs have a very proud history of Australian junior and senior representatives, Olympic gold medalists, Australian captains and even Italian captains! Queensland Thunder Water Polo proudly respects and celebrates the history of both clubs and strives to create an environment for excellence and the love of water polo.
