Becoming a race official is a rewarding and fun way of volunteering and contributing to the running of sailing regattas.

SA Sailing provides programmes that cover the span of officiating skills from entry to advance level within various race official roles.

The SA Sailing Assistant Race Officer (ARO) Programme is designed to develop assistant race officers to assist at Club and or District level competition and forms an introduction to the formal SA Sailing Race Officer’s framework up to National level competition. The programme is made up of theory-based race and regatta workshop and practical experience with club competition

The SA Sailing Club/District Race Officer Programme is designed to develop race officers to facilitate Club and or District level competition and forms the entry point for the SA Sailing Race Officer’s framework up to National level competition. The programme is made up of theory-based race and regatta workshop and practical experience with club competition.

There is no charge for the course.

Lunches and refreshments will be available on Saturday and depending on the numbers for Sunday the galley may be open to provide meals and refreshments.


This course is run at Club level, please contact your club if there is no scheduled course showing.

Programme Overview

The SA Sailing Club/District Programme is designed to develop race officers to facilitate Club and or District level competition and forms the entry point for the SA Sailing Race Officer’s framework up to National level competition. The programme is made up of theory-based race and regatta workshop and practical experience with club competition.

Programme Prerequisites

  • Be a min of 18 years of age
  • Attend a Club/District Regatta and Race Management Workshop, facilitated by a Club.
  • Have a portfolio of evidence with at least 10 club races at which they officiate.
  • Obtain a letter of recommendation from your club.

Programme Format

The Current format of the programme is Club run in two parts one, is a Race and Regatta Management Workshop and two is practical experience of at least 10 club run races. SA Sailing certification for this level of training will only be considered on the receipt of a portfolio of evidence which include a letter of recommendation confirming programme completion and endorsing that the necessary standards has been met.

The programme is updated regularly to include relevant aspects of the new racing rules, recommended best practices and any updates to the SA Sailing policies and procedures. As a result, additional modules may become required to keep accreditations active.

Programme Outcome

The successful candidate will be able to facilitate Club or District competition and can assist at higher levels of competition.

On completion, the successful candidate will be awarded a SA Sailing Club/District Race Officer Certificate

Course evaluation

Candidates will be assessed on the evaluation and recommendation from the candidate’s club and submission of a portfolio of evidence. Written and or practical assessments may apply.
