PORT MACQUARIE SAILING CLUB

10-3-19

The Port Macquarie Sailing Club had programmed to have race 6 of the handicap start series on Sunday, but due to the light breezes forecast and a number of sailors being away, it was decided to run race 6 of the summer series instead. The race was run in a light South Easter under sunny skies in the first part of the run-out tide.

The catamaran division was won on both yardstick and handicap by Frank O’Rourke on Dino ahead of Rob Barwick on Drift. Tony Kuhn is out for most of the remaining season with a work injury.

The monohull fleet was dominated by Martina Holt in Spellbound despite an unplanned 360 degree spin at one stage due to lack of concentration, but still taking both the yardstick and handicap wins. Roger Shipton in Zasoo was second on yardstick followed by Steve Couch in Rainbow, Stuart and Craig Symons in Elmo, and Mick Hodgson in Big Blue. Rainbow took the second place on handicap over Zasoo, Elmo, and Big Blue.

For a while now, Simon Gandy and helpers have been teaching a number of juniors to sail, and up until now, they have been sailing of a morning on their own, and often racing with others in the main race in the afternoon. On Sunday, a separate division was set up for the juniors with a shorter course. This first race was won on yardstick by Elsa Gandy and Bridgit Taylor in Flying Fish ahead of Kaitlyn Hicks and Liam in Britannia and Jett Hodgson in Baby Blue.

Next week is race 7 of the Summer series starting at 2pm. Simon Gandy is rostered on duty.
