Port Lincoln 37(133) defeated Great Flinders 23(100)

Going into this year’s showdown, on paper the Lincoln side looked dominant in the top half but Great Flinders looked extremely consistent in the rest of the list and it was predicted to be another tight fought contest as in recent years.

The first round of 20 singles had a few upsets and Great Flinders won the round 11(41) to Lincoln’s 9(41). Lincoln’s top players won the majority but from number 8 down, Great Flinders took over. A major boil over in the first match of the night went to the in-form Lester Barnes who took down Lincoln’s State junior, Nathan Fong, wearing him down to win in 5 tough sets 11-8, 6-11, 8-11, 11-9, 11-9, Lester’s persistent pressure causing his young opponent to falter with fault serving several times.
Yeelanna team mates, Russ Fordham playing for Lincoln took on Great Flinders’ Matt McLachlan and in another epic 5 set match, Russ gave up a 0-7 lead in the 5th set but stormed back to a scrappy but well earned win 13-11, 11-5, 3-11, 4-11, 11-9.

In the first round of doubles, the Lincoln side got some unexpected wins and took control of the contest 8(25) to 2(11), with the stand out match of the doubles round between Lincoln’s Sally Kunze and Joe Perone taking on Great Flinders ‘ Ross Kerr and Tom Baldiserra, the Lincoln pair prevailing in an epic match with some fantastic rallies 7-11, 11-7, 12-10, 0-11, 12-10.

The second round of singles got underway and was expected to be just as close as the first round but the home team were completely dominant winning the close 5 set matches and winning the round 14(46) to 6(29). Lincoln’s Ben Southam tuned in his aerial to come from 2 sets to 1 down to outlast farmer Andrew Cabot 10-12, 11-6, 9-11, 11-5, 11-5. Port Lincoln’s Joe Perone as usual gave his all but went down narrowly to Great Flinders’ Ross Kerr 11-7, 9-11, 11-8, 7-11, 9-11. Local priest John Folkman for Lincoln played a nail biting 5 set marathon match against fellow slow chopping Luke McLachlan 7-11, 11-6, 12-10, 6-11, 11-9 with Jarrad Hill enjoying umpiring this long contest.

With victory already assured for Port Lincoln, Great Flinders fought to the end and played well in the tiered doubles but the Lincoln side still won the round 6(21) to 4(19). Six of the ten matches went to 4 or 5 sets and the standout one of these was Great Flinders Andrew Cabot and Mike Bradford beating Lincoln’s Troy Sederstrom and Cheryl King in what was a highly entertaining attacking match, 14-12, 11-3, 6-11, 7-11, 11-7.

Port Lincoln players who won all 4 matches for their team were Shane Stockham, Mark Strycharski, Martin Sheridan, and Ralph Sandford, while for Great Flinders, Mike Bradford won 4 supported by Alex Jaeger and Ken Roediger with 3 wins each.

At the end of the evening, Great Flinders captain, Jarrad Hill presented the winning shield to Dan Challinger, captain of Port Lincoln. The teams then enjoyed the delicious supper provided by the Port Lincoln players.
