FAQ
What is the cost to join?
PJRD skaters must pay insurance each year based on level (range is $85- $110 competitive). Training fees are paid per school term based on training level and therefore number of sessions each fortnight. It works out at $12-$15 per training session.
We welcome new members any time throughout the term/year. Please contact us if you would like to attend a trial so that we can make sure there is a suitable coach to welcome you and show you the ropes.
What level of skating ability is required to join?
Skaters must be confident in skating unassisted and stopping safely in order to join PJRD. If you have attended STAR classes at Rollerdrome, you must be minimum Star Class level 2.
Do you offer skating lessons for beginners?
No, we only provide coaching for Roller Derby Skills. Morley Rollerdrome offer Learn to Skate classes for absolute beginner skaters.
When does PJRD train?
Training is held during school terms only from 5:30-7pm on the following days:
- Tuesdays @ Balga Leisure Centre Sports Hall (109 Princess Road, BALGA)
- Fridays @ Morley Rollerdrome (95 Catherine Street MORLEY)
Do I have to attend all training sessions?
We understand it might not be feasible to attend every session however more time on skates equals faster development! We recommend attending as often as possible, but it's not imperative. Note that sufficient training sessions need to be attended for Level 3 & 4 skaters to safely participate in Scrims. This will be up to the discretion of coaches.
What equipment is required?
Roller derby is played in 'speed style' quad skates (not the typical Impala type skates with a heel and boot that extends past the ankle).
All of the following safety gear is required for every training session: Skating helmet (bike helmets are not suitable), mouthguard, wrist guards, knee pads and elbow pads.
Children grow fast and you can pick up good quality second hand gear on Facebook Marketplace to suit growing feet and bodies - this is a good place to start! There are dedicated Roller Derby Buy/Sell/Swap groups that you can request to join too. Otherwise Lucky Skates has all of the equipment you will need and sell starter packs.
What should I wear for roller derby?
We suggest wearing comfortable sporting wear such as sports shorts, leggings, track-pants and t-shirts or singlets. We do not accept shirts with offensive or abusive logos or messages. Denim shorts or jeans are strongly discouraged because they impede movement. We also strongly discourage skaters wearing large, hooped earrings and spiked jewellery, for their own safety and the safety of others.
We suggest that if your skater has long hair, tying it up at the base of the head or in plaits/braids as this won’t affect the position of the helmet on the head. Helmets are designed to sit just above the eyebrow for most effective protection. Helmets that move too close to the hairline do not protect the head effectively.
