On January 8th and 9th, the Youth Phoenix Beach Volleyball program hosted two Talent Identification (TID) camps at Nobby’s Beach in Newcastle. The team welcomed 60 athletes for U16-U18 and 30 athletes for U14-U15 as a part of the selection process for the 2023 Youth Beach state team selection.
“As beach volleyball gains popularity in NSW and with the rising talent in our current youth cohort we have created a new opportunity for athletes to show their talents and for us to discover future talent.
This event was a huge success as we saw many new athletes who just started playing as well as others who come from indoor volleyball and wanted to give beach a try. Often it can be hard and intimidating for young athletes to try a new sport so we are doing our best to be open and encouraging to fresh starters while providing a quality opportunity for those in our pathway to test their physical and technical skill sets.”
Martin Reader, Head of Pathways
Volleyball NSW Talent ID camps consist of two different sessions, the first is skill evaluation and physical testing followed by a second session of gameplay and competition. This process provides the Phoenix Pathway objective opportunities to evaluate athletes for short term selections to further state team activities as well as long term athlete tracking for comparison and analysis.
This Talent ID Camp was a part of a much bigger weekend in Newcastle with over 200 players competing in our Beach Volleyball Tour (BVT). The Junior (U19/U23) and Youth (U15/U17) BVT competitions also form a part of the Youth Phoenix Talent ID process for athletes to be invited to the 2023 Phoenix Youth Beach State Team Camp January 28th/29th in Manly.
