Event information
Every half moon, there is a day of lesser tidal movement, strongest between seasons, known uniquely in SA as the dodge tide.
This is the day to circumnavigate Torrens Island, a trip of about 20km, when there is minimal tidal movement. The Tour takes in mangrove forests, the Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary, the Ships Graveyard, North Arm, Barker Inlet, The Cutting and the Port River. The trip also passes the ASC where Submarines can be spotted.
Dates are selected when the dodge tide falls on the weekend, and at a suitable time of day. The direction of rowing is chosen on the day depending on the wind.
Description of the tour - anticlockwise with two stops
Row north down river, turn right into the North arm if safe to do so, then turn left into Barker Inlet and row around to the Garden Island boat ramp/picnic area stop for the first change.
If the water is rowable to continue towards to ocean, either until the Cutting is reached, or conditions become unrowable and the boats turn around
The second stop is then either Garden Island again, or the beach near the Quarantine Station Jetty for a quick changeover.
