Stefani Jelic a familiar face around the pool deck at many of the big carnivals around Australia. Stef is a highly experienced referee and leading the way at Water Polo NSW as Referees Coordinator this season, with a passion for teaching and mentoring referees of all ages. She will also join the AWL Panel of Referees for her first season in 2024.

Andrew Carney is NSW Head of Referees and in 2024 will take to the pool decks for his 27th season of the AWL.

In addition to his work on the domestic water polo scene, Andrew is one of eight Australian World Aquatics (AQuA) referees, refereeing at recent international events such as the U20 (Juniors) Mens World Championships in Bucharest, Romania in 2023, and in Prague, Czech Republic in 2021, as well as the 2022 World Aquatics World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

The highlight of Andrew’s refereeing career, to date, he says is stepping out on pool deck at Margaret Island, with a full house of over 7,000 spectators in Budapest for the 2022 World Championships, to referee the Hungary vs Italy (Men’s) with Boris Margeta, 5-time Olympic Referee.

We all love our Water Polo but over the past few seasons we have seen some changes in the rules, been through some tough times with COVID and we could all do with a fresh start. Make the time to catch up with Stef and Andrew over the weekend and get more out of your sport.
